Will My Phone Work With a Portugal eSIM?

Before you buy any Portugal eSIM, there is one thing worth spending two minutes on: making sure your phone can actually use it. The good news is that most phones from the last few years can. The bad news is that a handful of common exceptions catch people out at exactly the wrong moment. Here is the clear list and a quick self-check.

The short version

If your phone was a flagship released since around 2018 and it is carrier-unlocked, it almost certainly supports eSIM and will work with a Portugal eSIM. The two things that stop people are an older or budget handset with no eSIM hardware, and a phone still locked to a home carrier.

Compatible phones (the list)

This is not exhaustive, but it covers the phones travellers actually carry:

| Brand | Supported from | |---|---| | Apple iPhone | XS, XR and every model since (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and SE 2020 onward) | | Samsung Galaxy | S20 and later, Note 20, Z Fold and Z Flip range, recent A-series | | Google Pixel | Pixel 3 and newer (a small number of early carrier variants aside) | | Motorola | Razr 2019 and newer, recent Edge models | | Others | Many recent Oppo Find, Huawei P and Mate, Sony Xperia and Honor Magic models |

How to check in 30 seconds

You do not have to trust a list. Check your own phone directly:

  • The universal test: open your dialer and enter *#06#. If an EID number appears (alongside the IMEI), your phone has an eSIM. No EID, no eSIM.
  • iPhone: Settings, then Mobile Data (or Cellular). If you see Add eSIM, you are good.
  • Android: Settings, then Network and internet (or Connections), then SIMs. Look for Add eSIM or Download a SIM instead.

If the option is there, a Portugal eSIM will install and run.

The exceptions that trip people up

  • Region-specific models. iPhones sold in mainland China and Hong Kong often use two physical SIMs and have no eSIM at all. A few early Pixel carrier variants were also eSIM-restricted.
  • Carrier locks. A phone still tied to a home-network contract will reject a travel eSIM. Unlock it before you travel.
  • Age and budget. Anything older than roughly 2018, and many budget Android phones, simply lack the hardware. This is not something an update can add.

If any of these apply to you, do not force it. We cover the workarounds in phones that do not support eSIM in 2026.

If your phone is not compatible

You are not stuck. A physical data SIM card gives you the exact same local network on any unlocked phone, and you can collect one at Lisbon airport. Travelling with family or a group, or carrying a mix of old and new phones? A rented pocket WiFi hotspot sidesteps the whole compatibility question by connecting up to ten devices over one unlimited connection.

Frequently asked questions

Which phones work with a Portugal eSIM?

Most phones released since about 2018 support eSIM: iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later plus the Z Fold and Z Flip range, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and many recent Motorola, Oppo, Huawei and Sony models. The phone also has to be carrier-unlocked. If yours fits that, a Portugal eSIM will work.

How do I check if my phone supports eSIM?

The quickest test is to dial *#06# and look for an EID number, which only eSIM phones have. You can also check your settings: on iPhone go to Settings then Mobile Data and look for Add eSIM, and on Android go to Settings then Network and internet then SIMs and look for Add eSIM. If that option exists, your phone is eSIM-capable.

Do older or budget phones support eSIM in Portugal?

Often not. Many budget Android phones and anything older than roughly 2018 ship without eSIM hardware, and eSIM has no bearing on that: it is a physical feature the phone either has or does not. If your phone lacks it, a physical data SIM card or a rented pocket WiFi hotspot gives you the same local network.

Why does my iPhone not have an eSIM option?

The most common reasons are a region-specific model or a carrier lock. Some iPhones sold in mainland China and Hong Kong use dual physical SIMs and have no eSIM, and a phone still locked to a home carrier will refuse a travel eSIM. Check the model and confirm the phone is unlocked before you rely on it abroad.

Does a Portugal eSIM work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. A Portugal travel eSIM is installed from a standard QR code that works the same way on eSIM-capable iPhones and Android phones. The menu names differ slightly between the two, but the process (scan the code, set it as your data line, enable it on arrival) is identical.
