Is eSIM Available in Portugal? Networks & 5G

Short answer: yes. eSIM is fully available in Portugal, it works on every major network, and it includes 5G. If your phone is reasonably modern, you can be connected on a local Portuguese network within minutes of landing, without ever touching a physical SIM. Here is the detail worth knowing before you buy.
Yes, eSIM works in Portugal
Portugal was an early mover on eSIM. All four mobile networks (NOS, Vodafone, MEO and Digi) support it, and the country's mobile infrastructure is genuinely good: fast, widely available and reliable in the places tourists actually go. A travel eSIM for Portugal installs digitally from a QR code, so there is no shop visit, no plastic SIM to swap, and nothing to lose down the back of a hotel bed.
The only two things you need are an eSIM-compatible phone and a data plan. No Portuguese address, no residency, no ID registration. You buy it online, scan a code, and it is ready.
The networks behind it
Portugal has four national mobile operators:
| Network | Notes | |---|---| | NOS | One of the two largest, strong nationwide coverage including the islands | | Vodafone | The other major player, excellent in cities and along the coast | | MEO | Broad coverage, the former incumbent | | Digi | Newer, value-focused, still expanding its own footprint |
Our own Portugal eSIM runs on a leading local network (NOS and Vodafone), which means you are on the same towers locals use rather than a weaker roaming signal. The data is genuinely unlimited: no GB ceiling and no fair-use throttling that quietly slows you down after a few gigabytes.
Is there 5G? Yes
Portugal switched on commercial 5G in late 2021, and by 2026 it covers Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve resorts, most mid-sized towns and the main motorways. A modern eSIM plan connects at 4G and 5G speeds automatically, with nothing extra to enable. If you are streaming, video calling or tethering a laptop, 5G is a real, noticeable upgrade where it is available. For the fine print on where the signal reaches, our Portugal internet coverage maps break it down by region.
Will my phone support it?
Almost every flagship phone from the last few years supports eSIM: iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models, Google Pixel from the 3 onwards, and many others. A few caveats catch people out: some region-specific models (certain Chinese-market and Hong Kong iPhones, older or budget Android handsets) ship without eSIM hardware, and your phone must be carrier-unlocked.
The safest move is to check before you buy. Our eSIM compatible devices page lists supported phones, and we go deeper in will my phone work with a Portugal eSIM.
Coverage: the honest version
Portugal's networks are excellent in cities and along the coast, and coverage reaches the mainland, Madeira and the Azores. But no operator covers every square metre. Signal genuinely thins out in the deep rural Alentejo, up in the Peneda-Geres mountains, along some of Madeira's levada trails, and on isolated Azores hikes. If your plans include those, download offline maps in advance and do not rely on live data at the trailhead. A pocket WiFi hotspot can help groups pool a stronger connection, and our road trip internet guide covers the gaps.
Getting connected
If your phone is compatible, an eSIM is the fastest option: buy it, scan the QR, and land connected. If your phone is older, unlocked but not eSIM-capable, a physical data SIM card does the same job, and a rented pocket WiFi connects a whole family on one device.

Frequently asked questions
Is eSIM available in Portugal in 2026?
Yes. eSIM is fully supported in Portugal. All the main networks (NOS, Vodafone, MEO and Digi) run eSIM-capable infrastructure, and a travel eSIM installs on a compatible phone in minutes with no physical SIM swap. You do not need to be a resident or have a Portuguese address to use one.
Do Portugal eSIM plans include 5G?
Yes. Portugal has had commercial 5G since late 2021 and it now covers the cities, most towns and the main motorways. A modern eSIM plan connects at 4G and 5G speeds automatically wherever 5G is available, with no separate setup.
Which network does a Portugal Internet eSIM use?
Our Portugal eSIM runs on a leading local Portuguese network (NOS and Vodafone), the same towers locals use, so you get genuine domestic coverage rather than a roaming signal. Data is unlimited with no GB caps and no fair-use throttling.
Does an eSIM work in Madeira and the Azores?
Yes. Coverage reaches mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores. Signal is strong in towns and along the main roads. It genuinely drops on remote mountain trails, some Madeira levada walks and isolated stretches of the Azores, so download offline maps for those days.
Do I need a Portuguese address or passport to buy an eSIM?
No. A travel eSIM for Portugal needs only an eSIM-compatible phone and an email address to receive the QR code. There is no registration, no local address and no ID check. You can buy and install it before you leave home.
