How to Get an eSIM for Portugal, Step by Step

Getting an eSIM for Portugal is genuinely quick, but the order of the steps matters. Do it in the right sequence and you walk out of the airport already online. Do it in the wrong order and you end up standing in the arrivals hall hunting for free WiFi. Here is the whole thing, start to finish.

Step 1: Check your phone

Two things have to be true. Your phone needs eSIM hardware, and it needs to be carrier-unlocked.

Most flagships from the last few years qualify: iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models, Google Pixel 3 and up. The usual exceptions are some region-specific models (certain Chinese and Hong Kong iPhones ship without eSIM) and older or budget Android phones. If your handset came free with a home contract, confirm it is unlocked before you rely on it abroad.

Not sure? Our eSIM compatible devices list is the fastest check, and will my phone work with a Portugal eSIM walks through how to test it in your settings.

Step 2: Buy the plan

Choose a plan that matches your trip length. Our Portugal eSIM comes with truly unlimited data (no GB caps, no fair-use throttling) on a local network, in 3, 7, 15 and 30-day options. Longer plans have a lower daily rate. If you want to weigh the choices side by side, the best eSIM for Portugal page compares them, and how much data do I need in Portugal helps if you are on a metered plan elsewhere.

Buy it online with a card. Delivery is instant: the QR code arrives by email, there is nothing to ship and nothing to collect.

Step 3: Install the QR code (before you fly)

This is the step people get wrong by leaving it too late. Install the eSIM while you still have home WiFi.

  • iPhone: Settings, then Mobile Data (or Cellular), then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code from the email. Label it something clear like "Portugal".
  • Android: Settings, then Network and internet (or Connections), then SIMs, then Add eSIM, and scan the code.

Installing does not start any clock and does not use data. It simply loads the profile onto your phone so it is ready to switch on. Leave the travel line turned off for now.

Step 4: Switch it on when you land

Once you are in Portugal, open your settings, select the Portugal eSIM as your mobile-data line, and turn on data roaming for that line (the term is misleading, but travel eSIMs need it enabled to connect to the local network). Within a minute or two it registers and you are online at 4G and 5G speeds. Keep your home SIM in the phone for essential calls and texts, just with its own data switched off to avoid your home carrier's roaming charges. For the fuller install walkthrough, see our eSIM guide.

Step 5: Sanity checks

  • Turn data roaming ON for the travel eSIM, but keep it off for your home line.
  • Set the Portugal eSIM as the mobile-data line, not your home SIM.
  • If nothing connects, toggle Airplane mode on and off, or restart the phone.
  • Keep the QR-code email; some phones need it if you reset the device.

If your phone is not eSIM-ready

No eSIM support, or a locked handset? You are not stuck. A physical data SIM card gives you the same local network and you can grab one at Lisbon airport. Travelling as a family or group? A rented pocket WiFi hotspot connects up to ten devices on one unlimited connection, which is usually the cheapest option per person.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get an eSIM for Portugal?

Check that your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, buy a Portugal eSIM online, then install the QR code you receive by email. You can do all of this before you leave home and simply switch the line on when you land. The whole process takes a few minutes.

Can I set up a Portugal eSIM before I travel?

Yes, and you should. Install the eSIM QR code while you still have home WiFi, but leave the line turned off (or set to data-off) until you arrive. When you land in Portugal, enable data roaming for the travel line and it connects automatically. Installing early avoids hunting for airport WiFi.

Do I need to remove my normal SIM to use an eSIM in Portugal?

No. An eSIM sits alongside your existing SIM, so your home number keeps working for calls and texts while the Portugal eSIM handles data. On a dual-SIM phone you just choose the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line and leave your home line for essential calls only.

How long does it take to get an eSIM working?

Usually under five minutes. Delivery of the QR code is instant by email after purchase, installation is a quick scan in your phone settings, and activation is a single toggle once you are in Portugal. There is no shop visit and no waiting for anything to ship.

What if my phone does not support eSIM?

If your phone has no eSIM hardware or is carrier-locked, use a physical data SIM card instead, which you can pick up on arrival, or rent a pocket WiFi hotspot that connects several devices at once. Both give you the same local Portuguese network without needing eSIM support.
